When SP2 first came out, this was a common problem when there was spyware or adware on the PC. As far as I know the only solution is to reinstall Windows. If you have data that you didn't backup on the drive, you may be able to access the data if you put the drive into another computer as a slave drive.
When you reinstall Windows, make sure one of the first things you do is install SP2 with it.

if your xp was a legal version, this should nto have happened. now u have no choice but to instal the xp without the sp2 - 270 mb piece. also possible that the download got corrupted. try again. sp2 - cds are available in shops.
