I read that it doesn't...mine broke..but I've never been with a guy- one day it just broke...some females aren't even born with one :\

it's how in medevial times they determined if a woman was "pure". before her marriage, a witch doctor or priest would come inspect the girl to determine if she had been kept pure for the groom. the hymen can be easily broken without penetration by tight jeans or exercise or with tampon use, so it is not a good determinate of virginal status. and it's true- some women just aren't born with them. also, you can no longer be a virgin, and your hymen can still be intact.

Because it's an easy way to scare women into not having sex until marriage. It's something that a small bunch of people decided was a way to test fidelity, and then too much power was placed on its presence. It's basically a way to oppress women. Sigh.

It's the only way to determine virginity, except for asking a direct question. Those cases you've mentioned are not rare, but there is no other way of knowing.
