DO NOT go to Pacifica and have a bonfire. The cops will visit you in seconds to make sure everything is legal. In San Francisco, ocean beach, it is illegal to have a bonfire, but from my experience, everyone does it and it is not enforced. Your choice if you respect the law or not. In the end, San Francisco will NEVER bother to arrest someone for having a bonfire. When I was a rebellious teen, I got caught smoking blunt, and all the cop did was ask me to put it out and put it away.

It is legal all year round. Only thing on Ocean Beach the Park Police frowns upon is camping. I've been able to start a bonfire without any problem in the area closest to the Cliff House. Make sure you bring lots of kindling and probably duraflame logs because driftwood is hard to come by at the beach. Also bring a strong fuel source because due to the high winds sometimes, it is difficult to start a fire.

Back in the 80's we had a huge bonfire at Ocean Beach, and some beach security guard came and told us to put it out cause it was illegal. Some rowdy people who we did not even know that joinned our party chased the guy off and threw things at him!He said he was going to call the cops on us but never did. It ended up a newspaper reporter was there as well, and we ended up on the front page of the San Fran Chronicle 2 days later about bonfires and partying at Ocean Beach being out of control. My sister and I had to hide the paper from my mom! I am sure it is probably still illegal!

the last time i had a bonfire there was last July. But i'm pretty sure it's okay, it might not be legal but i don't think a cop would arrest you or cite you. I see people bonfire there all the time. If you go on holidays, there's probably like 10 bonfires.

Like so much else in San Francisco, it's in legal purgatory. For years it was actually legal. Recently, they've been cracking down on the bonfires though. Then the public protested, they had hearings, then public protested the results of the hearings, they schedule more hearings...(repeat about ten times)

AT THE MOMENT:

Fires are allowed between Lincoln Way and Fulton Street only (directly opposite Golden Gate Park)

This could change at any time. The government's website has the details:

I'm not sure?! Before May 31, it was legal on a short strip between Fulton and Lincoln, as long as folks followed a "leave no trace" policy. Recently, there has been a proposed ban submitted to the national park service (via the Golden Gate National Recreation Area). I'm not sure what the results are.

They aren't legal but I've never seen it enforced. I live three blocks from the beach and can pretty much tell you that....hold on...let me open the window....**sniff sniff**....yup. People still build fires on the beach. It's not uncommon for me to see people walking towards the beach at sundown pulling wagons or carrying totes piled up with wood for their bonfires.

And the bonfires are a nice accompaniment to the fireworks that seem to go off nightly.

Of course, it's illegal to set a BONfire on public land. You definitely need to get a permit from the Fire Dept, at the very least. (It is as illegal as setting a bonfire in our parks.) Sparks are the reasons for many forest fires.

Just do it, if you get caught just play the i didn't know role. If you call the fire department ahead of time they will more than likely say no...in life sometimes you just have to be dishonest.
