My computer is malfunctioning, & I must give it to the repair person. Everything will be cleared from it. I have NUMEROUS itunes (mp3) files, graphics, documents, photos, etc. I don't want to lose them!

It sounds like your computer is still functioning...

Based on how you asked your question, you don't have a server or are not the administrator. Spining up a server for just this task will be too hard. Finding a friend hopefully will not be...

Saving the mp3s, docs, graphics will be easy.
Recovering programs much harder. I hope you have the disks.

so

if you don't have a friend...

1. don't use a server.
if your computer supports it, get a large usb disk or firewire, stick in the cable, it will just work with Windows XP and Windows 2000, and drag and drop your files. this is a neet solution for longer term as well.

if your computer does not support usb or firewire, and if you can do it, stick in another hard disk and do same.

2. if you DO know of a server then you should speak to the server administrator. they will give you some information on how to log into the other machine. this does vary from server to server and adminitrators.

non-server .. other windows machine
and there are ways to set up disk sharing with two XP machines .. but the instructions are a bit tedious. Best to find some local help.

esp if you will share your files...

Often one can mount a drive leter... like
net use x: \\theserver\theshare password /user:username

3. if it is a unix/linux server then use a program like putty/pscp or ftp to copy files over to it. sometimes one can use the mount a drive option there too. again the server owner can tell you what to do.

if you don't have a friend, then there are some repair places which will do this for a nonimal fee. Perhaps the place you will take it to get it fixed. Most do not ask too many questions.

In order to save then on a server, you would have to have a second computer, a router, and a network set up between the two computers. Then you would be able to open and see the hard drive of the second computer on your computer. You would then just drag the files to the window that shows the second computer, and drop them there.

If you do not have a second computer and a network set up, you will have to copy you music, etc. to CDs or DVDs.

Is this a work pc? In order to save your files to the server you havae to be networked to a drive on the server. You must have access to store and move files to the networked drive. Would be easier to make a folder with your name on it, then drop and drag or just copy the files to your networked drive(server).

You can also do a search for online storeage space. You may have to pay by the gig.

If you have a server, create a share on the server and connect to it over the network to save your files. If you don't you could save the files to CD if you have a CD Burner. Also, make sure to deauthorize your itunes account from that PC.
