What was lesbianism and homosexuality like during the 19th century? How were the conditions of life? Is most of the history of lesbians and gay people very hidden and isolated? It seems like homosexuality was invented in the early 21st century. It’s all very new. What happened back then?

An interesting work with biographies, bibliographies and history as well as the poems is
"What Sappho would have said", Four centuries of love poems between women. Edited by Emma Donoghue, published by Hamish Hamilton, 1997.
ISBN-0-241-13682-2.
The editor explains how relationships changed over time.
Some poems are sad, some tender and one "For Willyce", shockingly funny.
I do hope you can find a copy.
Kind regards, Rose P.

All homosexual activity in the western world, at least, was forbidden and very hidden. It happened, but it was so under wraps that those who engaged in it were traumatized by the need for secrecy. There was little understanding of homosexuality until the 20th century anyway.

Most of the problems and hardships of sexuality then were pined on social status, just as they are today. In short, the poor had a rough time of it often, and the rich had more options.

There's a long history of famous and infamous gay and lesbian persons in each generation going back historically to the renaissance period, when information became easier to keep thanks to the printing press. Of course, there are infamous affairs and societies long before that, so don't think gay life was just decided on a few decades ago!

The rich tended to marry and carry out their gay life on the side, such as famous writer Oscar Wilde, or be out and somewhat ostracized "dandies" such as Walt Whitman. There was the "camp" tradition of collegic gays in Europe of the time...a time of crossdressing and same sex activity that had a history going back hundreds of years, and is occasionally cited as the root of our current queen culture. The middle class were often stuck dealing with the societal issues of the day...which being Victorian basically meant any sexual act, gay or straight was socially frowned on. And the very poorest ended up the same way so many poor souls do today...trapped in prostitution..."rent boys" as they were known then.

Don't know. I'm old but not that old.
Contact the gay center regarding places where you can get info from that time frame. If you have a gay book store, they'll be able to help you. Contact Gerber Hart Gay Library in Chicago. They have a massive collection- I'm sure they can help. Good luck.

It was okay in Greek times, back then when it was real religious. It probably meant death or imprisonment

Look of Asian Homosexuality, you'll see it was very common.
Back when there were multiple gods, everything was good. It wasn't viewed as bad at all. It was viewed as normal

I don`t know what they had to deal with in the 1800, most were in the closet then, but back in the days of lot, they were destroyed by God, it was in the land called sodom and gamorrah. Its not new, In the Bible it tells that effeminate Is an abomination. And no, it wasen`t only Effeminate, it as other sinners too, the whole place was full of sin, only Lots family was taken out, and his wife looked back , and she turned into a piller of salt.
