If you mean a short throw shifter it changes the position of the shifter as to allow you to make faster more precise shifts. It shortens the distance between the gears.

it shortens the shift time down ,on any transmission,,how it does it ,,it makes the gears seem closer together,,and it takes less time to shift a long shaft shifter has to travel a lot farther to get to the gear,it all seems like it don't make sense,,but it does,,most street cars ,,and drag cars have short shifters on them,,it also ,makes you less likely to miss a gear,,i own a repair shop,,and we custom build some shifters for the older vehicles,i hope this help,s,,good luck with it.
