If you want a powerful machine as cheap as possible, buy the parts seperately from the internet and build it yourself. It may sound a bit daunting, but its actually pretty simple.
A good computer here will cost your anywhere from £1000-£2000+. I built my own with specs higher than most pre-builds, and it cost me £700-£800 in total.

Go to a local computer shop and have them build you a custom rig....You can get a pretty awesome machine built usually for around $1000-$1500 before monitor, speakers, and other peripherials....
I always recommend buying custom built becuase they're easily upgradeable down the line, where a brand name one is not as easy and will go old and slow in the future.....
A couple things to think about about here....Spend as much as you can on your monitor if you're getting a new one, since this is something that you're going to keep for a long time...I like to make the comparison to buying a car and a TV....You might buy a car and keep it for a few years, then get another one, as the current one gets older...When you buy a TV, it's something that you're going to keep until it dies....The same thing applies to computers
You might get a new box after a few years (or upgrades), but you'll prolly use the same monitor til it dies, or you give it to yer grandma....The same principal applies to speakers, too....
Finally the best thing about getting a built system, is that you get what YOU WANT in there, and not what some corporation thinks YOU NEED....Also you're putiing your $$ in the hand of a local merchant instead of a souless corporate giant...This translates into building a lasting relationship with people you'll get know over time, meaning you'll get faster service if something goes wrong, you'll get better recommendations on how to spend your $$, AND you'll find someone there who has the same enthusiasms as you have (like gaming, or whatever)...not some salaried talking head.

As the others have mentioned, if you want a gaming desktop the best thing to do is have it custom made. Don't buy a Dell or any of the other popular brand names. They make computers for simple home use. Check with small, but reputable computer shops and see what they can do for you. If you live in the central florida area send me an email and I'll give you advice. You can make a seriously powerful machine with that kind of budget.

Goto www.tigerdirect.com and look up Barebone PCs, they're ones you can put together and they're usually cheaper. Or you can build a custom rig using one of their templates. Here's an example of gaming rig and their estimated prices:
Mobo: ASUS A8X-SLI Board - 189.00
Processor: Athlon FX-57 or less - 650.00
Video Card: Two GeForce 7900 512MB - 1000.00
Case: Coolermaster - 120.00
Memory: 2GB RAM - 200.00
HD: 150GB Raptor 10,000RPM - 150.00
300GB 7500RPM - 100.00
Well it's right on the mark....you can try www.abscomputers.com or www.cyberpower.com or www.voodoo.com for nice gaming rigs!
