For one the citizens of America are no match for the collective Armed Forces. Second, to unravel the government is to cause anarchy, and we're better off with the system as it is without sufficient cause to. Third, most people are content to allow them to keep the most advanced technology out of sight as it provides an advantage against our enemies. It would prove dangerous to let such secrets out.
If you've played Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas you basically know what you can expect. There is no contest. The only possibility is for an insider to find out and tell all. Storming the gates, just wouldn't work.
Just accept it, as long as this nation stands strong, you will never know the secrets. We are safer that way.
Area 51 is mostly a decoy now, the more secret stuff is elsewhere.

There's this whole getting shot and arrested thing that most of us care a wee bit about.

Besides, Area 51 is where the US military may or may not have developed stealth technology, and may or may not be their classified 'skunk' works for weapons testing and development. A place that large would be impossible to hide, so why not mask it with some kooky conspiracy theory? Perfect cover for odd objects flying about, flashes of light, and you get the added bonus of a bunch of distrustful whackos doing your security because of course they would be very suspicious of any starngers in their midst. Probablly drove the Russians nuts in the Cold War, trying to infiltrate spies into the area when normal citizens would have them pegged as not fitting in before they could get their jobs done.

I may or may not know what I am talking about on this one, and may or may not have signed a confidentiality agreement based upon work I may or may not have done at aforementioned site.

The government has done a good job of making the public ridicule the whole idea well enough that you couldn't really get enough people. That site has some protective order that allows for lethal response. If such a throng of people marched in, the guards would be within their legal limits to kill every single person.

They are probably apathetic to the issue - as they are quite numerous, diverse, and may not have aliens as their number one priority. Most Americans are busy worrying about their jobs, family, health, first. Then, maybe they will worry about the local, state, national political scene. Lastly, they may care about international perspectives on world affairs. Area 51 is a little bit lower on the totem pole for priorities.

Its government land, meaning you aren't alowed on it.

So even if you made it through the fense, you would most likely be killed before you even made it to the building.

If you were lucky enough to make it to the building, once you made it inside, you'd find some nice heavily armed guards.

The rest of the complex is underground.

Have fun.

because nobody with any sense believes these old, foolish conspiracy theories. Do you really believe that our government could keep a secret...let alone that space aliens visited our planet.

get real.
