this is a way of insulting someone who appears to be just copying somebody else rather than understanding what they are doing or doing it from a meaningful motivation

the idea is that a monkey might see someone doing something like typing, and will come over and knock its fingers on the keyboard

"monkey see, monkey do", but of course the monkey is not actually creating anything

the same if somebody does something idiotic like throw a rock at a window or get in a fight because they saw somebody else do and thought it was cool, you might shake your head and say "monkey see, monkey do"

implying they are acting simian, stupid, monkeyish
