DBL Flared plugs are annoying, they come in amazing designs and styles, but they have a downside.

First thing is you have to stretch your ears to to the size of the widest part of the flare. Different companies measure differently. Some measure the middle part as the gauge size, other measure the widest part of the flare. On average the Flare is 1/2 a gauge,1/4 to 1 gauge difference in size than the middle size..
Stretch your ears to the gauge of the flare and your ears will accept the new jewelry.
The problem with dbl flared plugs is you have to take them out every few days so your ears don't permanently close down to the shape of the flare, of this happens, the plugs will be very difficult to take out and regular tunnels will be painful to put in. Your ears will take a while to go back to normal if this happens.

I have single-flared 2 guage in my ears now. They're really easy to put in and remove. Ya just put an o-ring on the backside, just like an earring back. As far as double flares go, they need to be one size smaller than your hole in order to put them in. Otherwise the flared end won't fit through. You could also get double flares that screw together, that way the flare never passes through your hole.
