I just moved in and I think my garage door is aluminimun and it does have existing paint that looks matte.
Can I paint on top of it, and what kind of paint should it be?
It's now red, and I want it to be white.

If the original paint is not peeling and there are no rusty areas then a quick scuffing with either a scotchbrite type pad or some 150 grit sandpaper just enough to roughen the paint up enough to give the new paint some tooth to grab onto will be fine, then apply a coat of primer/sealer (since you are going from a dark color to a light one) and after that dries apply your new paint and let it dry and then apply a coat of clear gloss and you should be all set.If the original paint is peeling or if there is rusty areas you will have to sand the peeling areas smooth with some 100 grit sandpaper then finish sanding it with some 150 grit sandpaper,as for the rusty areas sand the rust off with some 40 or 36 grit sandpaper and then do the 100 grit followed by the 150 grit sandpaper then prime and paint. As for what kind of paint to use I recommend good old "rustoleum" primer/sealer in a light Grey color and "rustoleum"paint and clear in spray cans.JUST REMEMBER TO SHAKE THE CANS OF PRIMER AND PAINT OFTEN AND THAT "TWO OR THREE LIGHT COATS"ARE BETTER THAN "ONE HEAVY ONE" and ALWAYS ALLOW AMPLE TIME BETWEEN COATS FOR PROPER DRYING,I recommend waiting 24 hours between the final primer coat and the first color coat and at least 48 hours between the final color coat and the first clear coat. AND OF COURSE REMEMBER TO COVER ANY AREAS YOU DON'T WANT THE PAINT TO GET WITH OLD NEWSPAPER HELD IN PLACE WITH MASKING TAPE AS OVERSPRAY HAS A HABIT OF FINDING THOSE AREAS.

1. You need to scrape any loose paint off
2. You need to wash it throughly and let competely dry
3. You need to scrape any loose paint off again and take a tack cloth and wipe down to make sure there is no dust.
4. Get a good primer that is for metal and paint the door, since it is red and you want white as the red will bleed through the white.
5. Then you can paint it white, should only 2 coats this way instead of 5-6. Let dry between coats..........
Doing it this way will insure the paint job will last at least 3-5yrs.

I exceptionally propose Sherwin Williams for here motives: you will no longer might desire to do numerous sanding. they have a Bonding Primer that's wonderful. All you will possibly want to do is remove any flaking paint and wash it. Use Acrylic Latex, everywhere. that's the final paint on the marketplace different than epoxy, which you do no longer decide to debris with except genuinely needed. in case you do no longer best (or in any different case prepare) you're dropping paint. training is the main needed portion of any paint job, and can by no ability be halfway executed. If lots of the paint is already lacking, i might lease a tension washing gadget, blast off the relax paint, then use Sherwin WIlliams Direct to steel (DTM) Acrylic Latex, no primer needed. once you paint, do no longer see how far you additionally could make the paint stretch. the assumption is to place the paint on, no longer bypass away as lots of it interior the can as obtainable. in case you have the different questions, touch me, i'm going to be happy to respond to. by ability of how, i'm no longer affiliated with Sherwin Williams. i'm a happy shopper. I even have used their paint many situations interior the previous with impressive outcomes. by ability of how, Bleach would not kill mildew, it bleaches it.

just use a good quality exterior latex paint. but I would wash it good first with some soapy water rinse and let it dry before painting
