Just uninstall your CD player and external writer and reinstall them.
At Arni, Zone Alarm isn't a great program and in fact can interfer with a lot more than your drivers.
I had a computer tech come here when I had a problem and it was Zone Alarm which was interferring with my other software and he recommended that I uninstall it and I did, everything was great.
Talked to the computer tech at work and he made the same comment Zone Alarm, although a firewall program, can corupt other items on the computer.
The Windows SP2 firewall is so much better and, if worried about hacking, get a router. It has its own firewall and nothing ever gets past the router.

Honestly , I do not know why I even bother to reply to such questions.
Zone Alarm is simply a Firewall program. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the drivers of the CD-RW or anything else for that matter. The Firewall engine or the Blocker has nothing to do with the way the Drivers for the hardware are made. The Hardware Drivers are probably made using tha Programing Language called " C ". I am totally sure that Zonealarm is not made using " C ".
In fact your friend may have done you a great Service by installing Zone Alarm onto your computer. By far it is one of the really good Firewall programs available out on the Internet. If your CD-Rom and external CD-RW was not installed properly in the first place then anything or rather any software program will actually mess up your CD-Rom and CD-RW. Even a simple update to Microsoft Direct X will mess up your computer under such a situation.
I suggest that you re-seat the ribbon cables for the CD-Rom, make sure the jumpers are set on it properly. Also make sure that the external CD-RW too is connected properly and securely. Make sure that the CD-Rom is set up properly in the BIOS.
Good Luck.

I second the get rid of zone alarm. Also the uninstall/reinstall should do the trick. Reinstalling SP2 is not necessary unless your friend or you installed it and then you had the problem with the drives. Even if that is the case then still try reinstalling the drivers for the drives.

Zone Alarm is not worth the amount of trouble it causes. Get rid of it as soon as you can.
