Do you excuse yourself when a large chunk of feces falls and makes a splash? Do you excuse yourself for making the sounds of tinkling?

Those are bathroom sounds, and certainly within the realm of acceptability in that setting.

I say you don't need to excuse yourself, but then I've sat quietly while friends have blessed their food when we've dined out together (yeah, I know...not quite the same thing).

If you feel more comfortable saying, "Excuse me," when you have made with the phffffffffffffffffffttttt in the bathroom cubicle, then go ahead. But, please don't take it too personally if somebody on the other side of the steel partition breaks out laughing.

Oh, and maybe you could lay off the beans for a while.

no, that would make it even more awkward for the other people in the bathroom. if i was in the bathroom and heard a loud fart i would probably want to laugh and i know i would definately laugh out loud if somebody said excuse me afterwards.

it could go either way. while it is something that may just slip out while ur doing ur buisiness and it is a way to get rid of unwanted gas (ie waste), somepeople do feel somesort of embarassment when this happends. so u could out of courtisy but u could not because it is a way of expelling waste from ur body, and isnt that the reason y ur even on the john.

You should excuse yourself loudly, then go forth and announce your sin to all.
