My husband is in the heat and air business. It will depend on the size of unit you will need, for the size of home you are buying. It will also depend on whether or not you have a split system(with one part of the unit inside and the other outside). Be careful what company you use, because heat and air can be a shady business. He says you could pay any where from 1,400 to 4,000 dollars plus labor, depending on the size of the unit. Good luck.

Inside and outside replacement costs vary depending on SEER. ( How efficient you want it) But can average it out by this. $1000 to $1500 per Ton, What I mean by ton is the size of the unit. go outside and look at model number on unit. Look for numbers like this ( Fr385 24 90t) you looking for number that go with Tons of cooling as, 12 is 1 ton ---18 is 1.5 --- 24 is 2 --- 30 is 2.5 --- 36 is 3 --- 42 is 3.5 -- 48 is 4 -- 54 is 4.5 and 60 is a 5 ton, I just installed a 5 ton for $6200.

This is one of those things that vary from region to region and depend on several factors. Call some ac companies in your area for quotes. We had a new one installed last year for around $2000.

There are many factors such as size of home, insulation rating ,dual pane windows or not, a packaged or split system, in ca ducting will need to be up to title 24 standards, placement on roof or on the side of home.
Best bet is to get several quotes and get some references.
