And I'm talking about something that someone paid money for: don't tell me some mushy stuff about how someone gave you their love...

The best gift I've ever received was my very first Barbie....at the age of 40.

I am the baby of 7 and growing up my parents didn't have a lot of money. I always wanted a Barbie but never got one.
I begged & begged and finally my sister bought me MIDGE.
She got Midge because she said Midge looked like me...freckles.
Oh how I hated my freckles and how I hated Midge!

I had told my husband this story and on my 40th birthday, I got two beautifully wrapped boxes. One had an original Midge doll from the 60's in mint condition in it's original box...the exact one that I had and hated as a child and the other was my very first Barbie...Princess/Bride Barbie.

I cried like a baby. I have them in their original boxes standing side by side and I love them both.

A metre of Trans Canada Trail (hiking/biking trail across Canada from East to West) in my name. As a sponsor, my name is inscribed on a plaque at one of the Pavilion. That gift had meaning for me (I love the outdoors/hiking/biking), showed that the giver paid attention to what's important to me, and will last for generations to come.

If I could have answered with a gift that didn't involve money, I would say the best gift I EVER received was my mud-caked hiking boots presented to me all cleaned and oiled. My boyfriend spent HOURS cleaning my boots and then mink-oiled them using a hair dryer to melt the oil into the boot, then reapplied. It was the sweetest gesture and took a huge investment of time and effort, which buying gifts doesn't involve.

As a kid I always wanted a barbie dream house. We never had the room for it, it was REALLY large. I had every other thing, including the barbie townhouse. It became a big joke that my parents would get me one eventually.

When I turned 32 last year, my mom found a barbie dreamhouse in the classified ads in the newspaper. I got to the house and she insisted I go into the living room - where a circa 1976 barbie dream house complete with barbie furniture was set up. :-)

It was such a cool gift, so thoughtful and so funny to get it about 26 years after I wanted it!

My father gave me a Farberware heavy duty 16 quart stockpot.
I am a big soup-maker, and only had an 8 quart size.
It was such a thoughtful gift. I use it year round.
It makes huge quantities of pasta sauce and is great for corn on the cob, too!

My grandfather gave me a Swiss Army spoon.

It has a fold out tablespoon, dessert spoon and a teaspoon.

Years later, it proved itself in a crisis.

Grandad lay choking on the ground with a piece of cheese stuck in his throat.

I selected the teaspoon and after some elbow grease and sweat made a complete tracheaotomy through his neck into his upper airway.

Thanks to the Swiss Army spoon, Grandad was able to breath until the paramedic arrived and removed the piece of cheese from Grandad´s mouth with his fingers.

Unfortunately Grandad died the following week of a severe infection of the trachea, although I don´t know what the cause of that was.

It was ironic that Grandad´s gift to me saved his life. That was I suppose in some small way my gift back to him.

My husband just bought us non stop roudtrip tickets to Carmel, CA (flying into San Fransico). And, found a great bed and breakfast that allows kids (our son is only six months old). He did this for our sixth wedding anniversary. AND, if that wasn't enough he just replaced all my kitchen appliances!!

But, the gifts I remember the most are the ones where I wasn't expecting them. :))

Ok, the best gift I ever received was last year from my daughter. She didn't have very much mney so she hit the dollar store and bought me a lot of little things, each one a treasure and most of them humerous.

The best gift I ever received was an unexpected gift. The fact that I didn't expect it was the best part of all.

I was given an English Mastiff puppy. I was driven to the airport on Xmas Eve because he was being flown in that day. I had no clue why I was there until they brought me the crate with him in it. I still have him and cherish him every single day.
