there is a lot of help out there right now, and I think that a lot of homeless people are just too mentally disabled to take advantage of that help...those are who I feel sorry for...Now the ones who are able mentally and physically to improve their situation and don't , them I have no pity for...

I was homeless for 2 months. I am not an addict. I had a job at the time I became homeless. I had a series of financial setbacks. My savings was wiped out. I could not afford the first, last and security. i did not qualify for ANY assistance. I ended up working 2 full time jobs to make ends meet. Friends helped by giving me a place to stay from week to week. There were times I slept in my car. I finally found a job that would cover my expenses.
Most people don't realize how close they are to homelessness. I never did. If you saw me you would have never known. I am a college educated woman with student loans, medical bills and no savings. It could be you someday.

The assistance you are talking about is pretty hard to obtain because you have to have proof of your status. I met some homeless people and not all are able to get anything going. Why not send some of the hispanics back to their country. Maybe then we'll have less of this type of problem and make room for the Americans.

I do feel sorry for homeless people. Our family has had to apply for various types of assistance due to a medical disability. The paperwork is difficult and confusing. I have a college degree, so I wonder how people manage who have not had much education or do not have access to transportation, telephones, etc.

Good question.
I've had a hard time with this. I believe in making things work for yourself. But, having lived my life to its fullest...I've met people who have been through this and were facing it themselves. I believe that as a society we judge these (and most groups different than our own) very harshly.
I've learned that I need to step out of my comfort zone and experience life through others. This means, volunteering for one. I would recommend a CASA/GAL program. This allows one to experience povery and see how the system works. You represent an abused/neglected child in the court system. Most of these children live at or below the poverty line. Some I've dealt with have been homeless.
There are many options. But, they are slowly being taken away by the current administration. So, their housing is limited to say 2 to 6 months. Unless you are going to school. In which case you get say a 2 year period for an associates and a 4 year period for a bachelor's degree. Plus, these people have kids and bills like cable, electricity and groceries.
The real plus is the option for school which gets them out of the system. I used to judge them harshly. But, after working in the legal system I feel sorry for them. Life is tough. Be thankful you've managed to carve out a niche for yourself. Many aren't so lucky!

No.. They dealt that hand to themselves, and there is a lot more help available to them than there is to a family of four,in which both the mom and the dad work a lot of hours just to make ends meet. Besides, they also pay taxes, some of which goes to the care and feeding of the homeless guy.

I do not feel sorry for them. A group did a study in my town a few years ago -- a homeless person could get over 30 free meals in one day in this city.

To a degree yes and to a degree no. Many are drug addicts or have mental problems. Some choose to be where they are. Some are thier thru unfortunate circumstances. Theres no one cause. There are options yes and i think more could take advantage of them.
