Having been around since the inception of MTV, my opinion on this matter is not a friendly one. I think MTV brought the music industry to an early death. The quality of music in terms of depth, innovation, and value to society has turned to pure crap! Instead of turning on the radio, or tv, and hearing interesting, fun, fresh music, the search for quality is a painful one. Bringing the industry to a visual medium also brought the industry to the lowest common denominator. A sad progression due to the visual access for the cretinous unwashed masses.

The older MTV got the more it has changed. When mtv first came out up to the mid 90s it was all music. Now u only see the videos in the early morning and for 4 seconds on TRL. The videos from the past starting in the 80s were first most all music and dance. later on other stuff was added and the dancing wasnt on as much. By the mid 90s only 1/3 of it is dancing and now in alot of songs there are sex sences in the video, like "sexyback" now by justin timberlake. It sometimes depends on this song. truthfully im p!ssed off u only see them in the early morning when ur in bed, at school, or at work. I listen to the radio more since u hardly hear the music and see all the crap shows. Its supposed to be MUSIC TELEVISION. The what MTV stands for. Its the same w VH1 now too. VIDEO HITS! What's it gonna be in 25 yrs from now? EERRRR!!!!

My opinion is that looks began to be more important than the music itself which is a shame because there are some really ugly singiner/songwriters out there that are probably extrememly talented but we may never know because looks are so g d important now. Some of the past singers may not have made it in the age of mtv. Speaking of MTV where is it isn't it supposed to mean MUSIC television where has all the music gone

MTV was the obvious death of Radio Stars. BUUUUUUUUT, in the past 8 years, it has been the death of which it pioneered, VIDEOS. MTV has only been an impact on Crappy Reality TV. The only time you can catch music on MTV is from 1 to 3 o'clock in the morning or during the 5 seconds on TRL. MTV CAN KISSS MY ASSS!!!!!!

It's become more about hype and flash and less about music. People need to be very attractive or have some really funky fashion going in order to make it and I'm sure there are a lot of VERY talented artists out there we never got to hear from because the didn't look good enough in their videos....

Conformity. MTV shows videos. The videos have to meet some sort of criteria. Bands must conform to meet these criteria. Some great bands sold out for MTV and continue to do so for even smaller things today. (Yeah. I hate Metallica)

Well, like the song said 25 or so years ago, "video killed the radio star." It's made image more important than substance. Coupled with the fact that advances in technology help disguise the inability to sing, you have more eye candy than real musicians.

It turned music from sound to looks. I doubt Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin or the Rolling Stones would have done well if they had to have depended on MTV.

I think MTV made hip-hop popular. There was this show where everyone is like doing the yo mama kind of thing and then hip-hop became popular.
