I was given the name Richard, and I was very attached to it for a long time. I never allowed friends to call me Rich, Richie, Rick or Dick. I always insisted on Richard. Then in College, I went by Harry for a while. I just wanted to try something new on. I went back to Richard. Ultimately, due to a typo from my cousin Murray, I ended up being nicknamed Rico. That I like. It combines "rich" as in wealthy, with "rich" as in tasty and delicious.
I wrote a play about a man who was named for Issac Newton. Issac Newton Bryant. Only he hated his first name, Issac. So he tried to go by his middle name, Newton. His classmates shortened it to Newt. But when then kids in elementary school learned that a "newt" was a type of Salamander, they all started calling him Salamander. That was eventually shortened to "Sal".
However, my best first name story is true. It is about my brother's friend, Scott Cook. My ninety year old grandmother took a phone message for my brother. She said, "Sharkey Kirk" called. My brother was puzzled. He went to his room. Three hours later he came bursting out of his room, having solved the puzzle, "Sharkey Kirk," he shouted, "equals Scott Cook." Even though he had never met my Grandmother, Scott Cook was ever after, and even to this day, known to everyone as Sharkey. That has become is first name.

When I was young, I hated my name, Geraldine, then my mother and dad called me Gerrybeth (my first and middle name nicked)
Then I changed it to Gerry, hated that because I knew a guy named Gerry, (never used Geraldine) then my girlfriend in the 8th grade changed the spelling to Geri, and walla....I have lived with that for all my years now. I like that. As to my given name Geraldine, only my mother and husband call me that when they want something or want to make a point of something.
Oh,,,,my mom is dead so I know if anyone calls me that they either are my hubby or my dead mom!!...

That's odd because I was just thinking about my first name today, and whether I like it or not. I like my name (it's Jeff by the way) but I do sound a little weird saying it sometimes.
I don't really like going by Jeffrey though, it sounds like a butler who changes diapers all day.

Yes, I do. The only annoying thing about it is that it's not common in my country, so people mispell it all the time. My name is Hannah, but it's not pronounced the way you're thinking, the stress is in the second syllable, because its the Hebrew pronounciation.

I love my first name. It's unique but not too out there, at least not for me. In case you are wondering, my name is Cadence. It's perfect for my personality.

I used to hate it and want to change it when I was younger. But I think as I became more confident with myself I have liked my name.
