Don't do it. If you need to ask then it is way over your head. The Northstar engine has a fairly complex timiing chain setup for one thing and second, the northstar engine is known to have the head bolt threads pull from the engine block which causes head gasket failure which I suspect has happened to your engine. The threads are repairable BUT you must have the proper thread repair kit made just for the Northstar engines.
Have an Experience Mechanic do the repair for you, AND MAKE SURE that they have worked on the Northstar engine before.
Safe yourself some grief !

Ah, the Northstar overheater. These engines have a long and soiled history of losing coolant at all the wrong places and times causing huge repair bills. They are so hard to repair there is no rebuild kit for them from GM -- the engines are exchanged for remanfactured units instead. I wouldn't begin to replace head gaskets on one of these until I talked with a very experienced mechanic that really knew how to do it and could tell you what you are in for.
Good luck.

This is a very big hard job, if you need to ask this question, leave it alone, if you tear it down and then take it to a shop for them to put it back together they will charge you twice as much

do NOT attempt this youself. You're getting in way over your head. one mis step and you're looking at ten times more than a mere head gasket repair.
