Think a lot of positive, optimistic thoughts. This is probably the key to happiness, and keeps your mind busy with the expectation of the best; and cheery thinking becomes a habit for you after a while. Do this first thing in the morning and it really gets the day off to a good start.

When I worked at Marks and Spencer, we called this 'staying at the top of your spiral' rather than spiralling downwards if some negative events happened during the day. Shake things up in your mindset and deliberately think 'different' positive thoughts. Visualise BEST CASE SCENARIOS happening in your mind's eye.....and they will.

Look at the bigger picture. When you find purpose in everything you definitely become happier, and less bitter. ie: its raining outside, but in the bigger picture, it means you don't have to water the garden tonight, so have more time to spend on other things.

Appreciate the people in your world around you. Allow them to come into your life, open up to them. Other people's unique characteristics and eccentricities really enrich life.

Have a break from the old routine. It could be something as simple as going to work a different way or eating something different for breakfast. Then you don't become bored.

Get out more. Do you have a good circle of friends? If so, then get out and about and do stuff with them (remembering all the time that you have a different type of friendship with each of them) and let them also enrich your life. Meeting new people and doing new activities, is also very exciting and stimulating.

Look after yourself. Eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and try and get about 8 hours sleep a night. This gives you more energy and helps your body to function better.

Surround yourself with things which bring you pleasure: plants, flowers, lovely aromas, music you like, books, paintings, animals, anything which is richly colourful. It creates a more joyous atmosphere in your surroundings.

Finally, take a good look at yourself. Make a list of your positive qualities (or get a friend to do this if you are having trouble). Things you like about yourself. Talents you have. Make it LONG. Then remind yourself of these often. This is your reminder to you that you are a worthy person with great characteristics, and great things to offer. Seeing yourself as useful and living with a purpose is a surefire way to feeling happy.

There are many 'secrets' to happiness. See if you can incorporate some of the suggestions in these answers, and your world will really change. YOU WILL REALLY BE ON THE RISE

Meditate. Fully appreciate everything that you are glad to have come into your life, however small, such as the several good answers you are getting here. After a year or two of this, allow that Love is guiding you and so you can be glad of everything that comes your way, including the stuff you don't welcome at first. Lead a life balanced between active and passive, social and quiet in such a way that you feel neither overwhelmed nor understimulated. Listen to others and be kind and helpful as best you can whether with empathy and understanding or with action and helping them solve their problems. Fully accept yourself exactly as you are as a wonderful being loved by Love Herself (whom some call God, but don't use that word unless you want to), while also being real about improving yourself. Be loyal to others and to Truth. Let hope rise above despair as surely as cream rises above skimmed milk (scum milk I call it LOL). Exercise and respect your body but remember it is only a resource you have been given, it is not YOU. Be peaceful ~ no-one can be angry and happy at the same time ~ use more patience and less desires and less ego every day and the tendency to anger will lessen. Be aware that happiness is a state of MIND, it's within you, it's not about who likes you or what you have in the bank.

You can't be happy. If you were all the time life would be a bore..but to enjoy the greater things in life AKA the little things, then when you take your drive to work in the morning or whaver, be glad that you've made this far and always keep things positive. I garentee that you'll see a difference in your life.

Take pleasure in the simple things in life. Look forward, not back. Count your blessings, of which you have many, not your sorrows, of which we all have a few. Love, laugh, face life with passion, dignity and a large dose of humour. Tell your friends and family how much you love them - make them feel good about themselves. Take some risks, be prepared to look foolish in quest for joy. Don't listen to pessimists, hang out with optimists. This is how I approach life, and my cups not half empty or half full - it's brimming over!!!
