Ok this is insane. After 29 years of doing laundry, I have never had a top loading washing machine "eat" my shirt. It is wrapped around the little thing that sticks up in the middle. I don't even know how to describe it, it is so crazy. I can't figure out if I'm able to take the pole thing in the middle out. I can't figure out which way it is twisted..I am going crazy...It was a brand new Ralph Lauren shirt *cries* helpp!

Oh, I have so been there.

Honestly, the first thing I recommend is sitting down and having a cup of coffee, or maybe taking a shower. It won't get the shirt out but it may make you feel better. One thing I've run into is that when I tackle problems when I'm frustrated, I make them worse.

You probably won't have to take the agitator/pole thing in the middle out, but if you do, there are instructions on places like eHow. (See URL list.) It sounds like it can be straightforward on some models and a little challenging on others. I found lots of sites with instructions by searching on "how to remove washing machine agitator".

If you can, get a mirror and a flashlight and see if you can get a better look at how the shirt is twisted around the agitator. Or look and see if there are any loose bits, like sleeves, that can be gently pried free. If you can do that, sometimes it loosens the rest of the big shirt knot enough so you can make more progress untwisting.

Take your time - the problem isn't going anywhere. The only need to be in a hurry is if you need to do more laundry. If it gets too frustrating and you've tried to get the agitator out with no luck, compare the cost of your shirt to the cost of a repairman. That'll let you know whether you're better off simply getting out the scissors, cutting the shirt free, and making whatever scraps are left into a couch pillow.

Good luck!

My guess is that part of the shirt is wrapped around the drive shaft in the middle of the agitator. You have to unscrew the top of the agitator and there is either a nut that holds the plastic part to the metal rod ( which is easy to remove with a socket wrench) OR a funny shaped device that does the same thing but takes a special tool to remove (easy if you have the tool). You can get the tool at most hardware stores. Good Luck!

Unscrew the top of the agitator.. if you have your book for that machine, it should show you how to do it.. then, lift it straight up.. hopefully, it's okay...

Take out the agitator out. Find your manual and look at it and it should show you details on how to remove the agitator or any other problem.
