A desktop is more reliable by far. Although a laptop is more convenient, a desktop doesn't heat up as much as a laptop. The hard drive , therefore, is subject to more extreme heat which minimizes the overall longevity of the hard drive. If you do get a laptop, get a hard drive that is not overkill for what you need. In other words, don't go crazy on the size of the hard drive unless you have a lot of music, video, or picture files. The smaller the hard drive, the less heat it gives off. Hope this helps.

Desktops are easier to upgrade and will last longer because of this. They're not more reliable per say, but because you can add things to them easily, they won't get left behind like a notebook/laptop will. If something breaks/gets fried on a desktop, you're buying components for it. On a laptop, if you've got a similar issue, you're probably going to buy a new laptop.

GMAN is right. Desktops are far more reliable. They get better ventilation, stay cooler, and run faster. Desktops are also more servicable, so if a part goes bad, it's easy to run to the store and replace.
Besides, I've never heard of desktops with exploding batteries. Sadly that's a problem now with alot of Apple and Dell laptops.

I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops and have had my share of desktops die in the past, from what I know it depends on what it is, on if you get the cheapest of either expect it to die quickly, if you are hard on the device either one it will take from its life. I personally prefer my laptop however there are times i still got to my desktop. In the end I think the manufacturers are making them more disposable so that does not help.
look at the main reason you need it, if you want it for work or play, for travel or home, what ever you get KEEP THE RECEIPT.

The Life Span of a laptop is dependant solely on how you use it and carry it around. With a good case and a gentle handle, a laptop can last you many many years. But normally desktops are less likely to be dropped, rained on, fried from forcing in a foriegn charger, or stolen while you walk to the vending machine or bookshelf.

A laptop is portable and can be taken anywhere.
