If I had inherited an estate, I, as my 2006 self, would legally emancipate the slaves on my estate, sell it in order to get the money to purchase other estates and do the same thing until some rednecks caught me and lynched me.

Think about what you are asking, realistically slavery was an ingrained institution at the time you are referring to .
How many black business owners hire illegal Mexicans today?
It is the same thing you are doing from what was done to you.
Hiring cheap labor and the workers have bettered their way of life.
By the way,the only people who owned slaves "back then" were rich plantation owners, blacks were free in the North.
So if it is such an issue today, with your question, why did so many blacks vote for Bush and other Republicans?
What is wrong yesterday, doesn't make it right today, history has proven that..so get over it .
Many white men died so your "brothers" can gain their freedom, and it was a southern Democratic President ,LBJ ,who enacted the civil rights reform laws which you and your brothers enjoy today.
Let's be real OK?
Have a nice "labor" day..our "slaves" of today are still in the fields although they are not African Americans .

Some of our founding fathers were slave owners, and ancestors of our current President were also slave owners.

Of course not. I am a white male. I would invent the cotton picker and the cotton gin. Come tot think of it, the white male did that the first time.

Several years ago, I told a friend, a black intellectual I admired very much that I thought slavery was a black mark on the history of the world.

But, I added I could see where I would be tempted if I had the opportunity to own a woman like the extremely beautiful woman who played Bill Cosby's wife on the show where he was a doctor.

He laughed and admitted he would be tempted by that himself...

what makes you think anyone wouldn't let anyone else do their work for them. People are so lazy today they would pay a 5 year to clean their house if they could. Why do you think all the jobs are going overseas. Don't want to pay the American working family good money . Have some foreigner do it. Pay them less and still sell for the same price. Wow what a profit !

I would go back even further in time and sink all ships that were enroute for Africa to pick up the slaves.

I wouldn't have slaves in the first place. I might buy it just so I could set him/her free, though. But I would never buy them just to make them work, that's so wrong.

If I could travel back in time, I'd join all those runaways, famous historical idols, and fight for equal rights. I'd take them into my home, feed them, worry with them, and do all that was in my power to achieve their goal of freedom. Slavery was wrong, to be put mildly.

Bronx Cheer to such a question and throw in two dozen Archie Bunker "THE BERRIES" while you're at it.
