I only had 1.5 GB of space left on my C:\ drive.
So I opened outlook and dumped 37 THOUSAND Emails.
(yes.... I said thousand.....damn I hate spam...)
It took about 7 min to clear.
Now I only have 1.29 GB free...
WTF? Can anyone explain this?

YES I dumped the deleted files folder.
There is nothing in the recycle bin (outlook dosnt use it anyway)

Yes I tried to recompact the mail directory file.

No there were no other programs running.

OK, for the dislexic people out there.
AFTER I deleted my email....
I had less room than I started with.

I KNOW each email doesnt take up much space...but...

How does deleting mail take up more space?

That's weird! I guess it's an outlook thing. Maybe it doesn't really delete the stuff. Do you have an outlook backup file (outlook backup.pst)? It's HUGE! You know, maybe you'd be better off using gmail webmail. Everything gets stored in there forever, and you never run out of space, and of course your HD stays cool. I was an outlook user, and since i use gmail, I just use outlook for contacts & calendar. And now I'm trying out Google calendar, but it's still not good enough (still beta).

Emails dont take up a lot of space because they are mostly text.

You want to delete things like multimedia files, videos and music they take up huge amounts of space.

A good way to find big files is to click on "start", "search", "for files or folders" and then "all files and folders" , "what size is it" and then "large".

This will find all the large files, make sure you dont delete things that you don't know what they are though because you might delete system files that your computer needs to run.

Turn off System Restore and then turn it back on. You will find that you have more room on your hard drive by doing that. To get to System Restore first go to Start then Settings then Control Panel then System Properties then click on System Restore tab. Then check turn off System Restore on all drives. Click OK then turn off the PC restart and then go back and UNCHECK turn off System Restore on all drives.
Also try these free programs to get more hard drive space: CleanUp! Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

CleanCache 3.0 is free at http://www.buttuglysoftware.com/ It does a great job of cleaning up your PC. The first time you run it you won’t believe the space it frees up on your hard drive.

I use them and they really help

It's not very difficult to explain ... emails don't take up very much space, even if there are thousands.

You could free up a lot more by deleting audio/video files or uninstalling programs you don't use.
