A novice would be far better off using the tuner. It's not hard. Lightly pick a string and tune until the tuner shows it's tuned correctly.
1st (smallest) sting is an E, 2nd B, 3rd G, 4th D, 5th A, 6th E

The strings go in this order from lowest to highest--E A D G B E Start on E. Pluck the string. If the tuner recognizes it as E, but the little arrow is not in the middle, turn the peg until it is. If the arrow is too far to the right, the string is too high. vice versa. Do this to all 5 strings. If your tuner doesn't work this way, then.... take someone else's advice.

What you are describing may be a setup problem. The action and intonation of your guitar have a lot to do with it staying in tune. If you have not had the action and intonation setup I would highly suggest it. You will be much happier with how your axe plays and holds tune. If you are considering new tuners, get the kind that lock. Schaler and Grover both make excellent tuners. Good luck and Play on!

you can't do it without a tuner unless you have perfect pitch, which the vast majority of people don't.
a guitar is tuned E A D G B E (first E being the thickest string). take out your tuner, turn it on, and hit the first string of the guitar. the gauge on the tuner should go either to the left or right. if it goes to the left, it's flat and the pitch needs to be raised (the strign needs to be tightened). if it goes to the right, it's sharp and the pitch needs to be lowered, string needs to be loosened. the goal is to get the gauge as close to the middle as you can. repeat with all of the strings.

If you do not have a keyboard, ask a friend.
Keyboards are always in tune at 440
Sound each string on the guitar with the correct key on the keyboard. Do this one by one.
Adjust the tone of each string to sound of the keyboard note.
Your guitar will then be in tune.

if you have a tuner, strum one string and check that the tuner shows the string your playing and tune it until the needle is in the middle.
