When I was a kid it was The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe.
It is a short story I know, but My idea of scary has changed a lot so I don't really read scary books too much. The Stand, that was scary.

Amityville Horror, the book scared the crap out of me, the old movie didn't do the book justice at all, haven't seen the remake. I also love all of Stephen Kings books, he is the King no pun intended, of scary.

About 20 years ago I read a book called "The Crib". The concept of the book was so disturbing to me I ended up throwing it out because I didn't want it in my house after I read it.

Any of the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child books are super creepy..start at the beginning with The Relic. The details and story line of that book were so well crafted that you will have no difficulty envisioning the "creature" they created...the hard part will be getting it out of your head long enough to sleep. :) Hope you like it!

The Demon in the Freezer: A True Story by Richard Preston.

I generally do not read nonfiction because I find it boring, but this one pulled me through the pages. I read it in about 36 hours because I couldn't put it down. It disturbed my sleep for about ten days.

After you read this, you won't worry about monsters or nuclear war. It's the bugs that we (people) are brewing in different corners of the world that are really frightening.

The Stand and Gerald's Game, both by Stephen King. Also The Bad Place by Dean Koontz ( I think). I couldn't finish Intensity by Koontz, scared me too badly.

I cannot remember the title, but I read it over 30 yrs ago and still remember it was about a teenage girl who had paranormal powers. She astral traveled and would not be able to return to her body if the the connection with her physical body was broken -- she would be lost forever in the other world.

I don't usually agree with others, but I found the Shining to be pretty darned scary. I would never read that if I were alone in the house. I have to find The Crib, thanks to whoever suggested that, that sounds interesting!
