The date everyone is talking about is 12-21-2012, not the 20th.
The calendar doesn't end.
The world doesn't end.
It makes me feel like you should have done your research before you posted this question.
I will reiterate what I have posted probably a hundred times on Answers.
The Mayan Long Count calendar isn't ending. It's rolling over from 12 Baktuns to 13 Baktuns-just like ours did going from 1999 to 2000 except that a baktun is 396 years long.
There's no "prediction" written down anywhere by the Maya about this date or the world ending.
Also on that date there is a once in 26,000 year alignment between the rising sun and the Milky Way which the Maya believed signified a new world age.
NOT the end of the world one--which BTW ended at least 10 years ago.

That the Mayans didn't count on the Spanish. Their culture is all but extinct. If they knew when the universe would end then they would have foreseen the Spanish invasion.
They just set their calendar to go for a long time. 2012 was long enough that they wouldn't be able to predict what would be going on. Since they didn't want to carve billions of stone calendars they had to have an end somewhere. December 2012 was just some arbitrary date they set, because it didn't matter much.
I am so bored with all these end of the world scenarios proposed by all these religions. Few agree on anything and often the date goes by and nothing changes. The bible clearly states that you cannot know the end of days until they are upon you. That's a smart idea, because you can keep stringing the people along.
If you want to worry about the End of the World then worry about Iran. They are developing the atomic bomb and WHEN they get it they are going to let Hezbollah use it. That could trigger a nuclear exchange that could lead up to WWIII.
Hezbollah is the terrorist group that has been shooting rockets into Israel, until the recent cease-fire. They also blew up the US Marine barracks when the UN tried to stop Hezbollah attacking Israel the first time. Hezbollah's sole purpose is to "drive Israel into the sea." If they get the atomic bomb then they will use it on Israel. Since Iran supplied their rockets and launchers, they are very likely to give Hezbollah a few small a-bombs. If Israel were attacked with a nuke, they would respond. Israel has had the a-bomb for a long time. They have their weapons staged thru out the country so they can't be taken out by a few attacks.
If nukes start getting thrown around in the Middle East then the whole world will get involved. With the demand, and scarcity of oil the danger of turning whole fields of oil radioactive is just too big of an issue for the industrialized world to not stay out. The bible also predicted a great earthquake in the Middle East would signal the End of Days. I think someone who lived in Imperial Rome or earlier would count an atomic bomb as an earthquake. Since there is a fault line, it could even trigger one.
Of course the end of days could also be signaled by an Imperial Star Destroyer, or the Death Star (mark whatever) making an attack on Earth. Then people would run to and fro asking for peace when there was none, and so on…
But, then maybe the End of Days will be caused by Vegia dropping huge Photon Torpedoes on Earth. Since the Star Trek series has been canceled their will be no Enterprise to defend us and …
You can no more predict the end of days than you can predict when the next asteroid is going to hit Earth. (Remember we haven’t found all the NEOs yet. That’s Near Earth Orbiting Objects. I think that someone from Imperial Rome or earlier would consider an asteroid attack, like the one that killed the dinosaurs, pretty close to an earthquake.)
But then maybe the End of Days could be caused by (enter the movie plot of your choice). There is no way of telling.

The end of the 13th b'ak'tun is conjectured to have been of great significance to the Maya, but does not necessarily mark the end of the world according to their beliefs, but a time of re-birth. According to the Popol Vuh, a book compiling details of creation accounts known to the Quiché Maya of the colonial-era highlands, we are living in the fourth world. The Popol Vuh describes the first three creations that the gods failed in making and the creation of the successful fourth world where men were placed. The Maya believed that the fourth world would end in catastrophe and the fifth and final world would be created that would signal the end of mankind.
The last creation ended on a long count of 13.0.0.0.0. Another 13.0.0.0.0 will occur on December 21, 2012, and it has been discussed in many New Age articles and books that this will be the end of this creation or something else entirely. However, the Maya abbreviated their long counts to just the last five vigesimal places. There were an infinite number of larger units that were usually not shown. When the larger units were shown (notably on a monument from Coba), the end of the last creation is expressed as 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0, where the units are obviously supposed to be 13s in all larger places. In this age we are only approaching 0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.13.0.0.0.0, and the larger places are nowhere near the 13s that would match the end of the last creation. (Schele and Friedel 1990: 430)
This is confirmed by a date from Palenque, which projects forward in time to 1.0.0.0.0.0, which will occur on October 13, 4772. The Classic Period Maya obviously did not believe that the end of this age would occur in 2012. According to the Maya, there will be a baktun ending in 2012, a significant event being the end of a 13th 400 year period, but not the end of the world.

Fine. There are several different dates out there for the end of the world and although the Mayans were very smart, that doesn't mean the world will end.

Maybe they just got tired of making calendars and thought they went far enough into the future....I'm sure the world will end at some point and I don't think we should dwell on it..live it up, enjoy life while you can.
