there is a big difference in the two,,one has all wheel drive,,it stays in all the time or comes in when needed,,the 4 wheel drive allows you to select when you want it to be in 4 wheel drive,,and this is the only difference, actually the old 4 wheel drive system worked real well,,but now all the car makers are switching over to all wheel drive systems,,and they are reliable,,but very expensive to repair,,as for the older systems they were, really good as far as dependability went,, im not sure about the newer ones yet, they have not been out long enough to prove there reliability,,i own a repair shop,,and i am waiting to see if the newer ones are going to be as good,,i hope this help,s,,good luck with it.

AWDs are 4x4's which are permanently locked so. Fluid couplings deliver ratios from 30:70 to 60:40 between front and rear depending on the situation. Typical 4x4 SUV's allow you to change over to 4x2, which is more fuel efficient. If you spend most of your driving time on 'soft' roads, a 4x2 with a changeover to 4x4 is good enough for you.

AWD is exactly what it says all wheels are pulling all the time on most there is no 2 wheel drive option on a 4X4 you have the choice of 2 wheel drive, high range 4 wheel drive, and low range 4 wheel drive I know on my girlfriends jeep cherokee it stays in 2 wheel drive and there is a AWD option on the shifter for driving in wet and slippery conditions..AWD cars and SUVs have much better traction and handeling in wet and slippery conditions

Usually 4X4 is an optional in or out function, whereas AWD usually activated by slipage in the front wheels. Meaning that when you are in mud or snow the front wheels will slip approx 1/2 to 2 revoultions and the sensor will activate the rear wheels. After you have established good traction, the sensor will return the vehicle to front wheel drive. In 4X4 you would have to manually select 2WD to return to 2WD.

They are not the same.
All wheel drive is always all four wheels. 4x4 you can switch back and forth. You want AWD!

4 x4 usually has a 2 speed transfer case with low range. AWD is more of a limited slip or traction control system.

awd is all wheel drive and 4x4 is two wheel drive that you can turn on the front wheels at lower speeds.. awd is where they are always in fourwheel drive and the front wheels disengage after you hit a certian speed...

yes, and to atart off they are both optional and 4 wheel drive has equal power to all tires ,,awd has equal power to all tires but when the car sees that a tire is slipping or something is difrent and a tire requires more power to a tire it will automaticly send mor power and requlate the power to all tires
