Most amateur guitarists take lessons for a short period of time and learn the basics and then teach themselves from there. As opposed to pianists who usually study for years.

I would reccommend taking lessons just until you have the basics down, cause it can be frusterating if you don't have anyone to explain it to you.

If you can't do that, start with basic chords. Look up chord charts online, just put your fingers where the dots are. Once you figure out how to read the chart, start memorizing. I would stay away from tabliture because it can be confusing and frusterating.

Here are some sites with chord charts and other basics--

If you already own a guitar, great. If you don't, go to a music store(Trestman, Schmitd, or any place local) and tell them you need a beginner guitar. Also buy a tuner and maybe a beginner instruction book.

It's not going to be easy, so if you're really serious about it, you're going to have to work hard.

ok first, string guitar? waiiit, are there any more kinds of guitars, besides string?

ok, first learn the basic chords.. the major chords, the minor chords, the 7th.. jus the ones that are often used. and then try learning tabs. it's easy learning all these things. it's the practice that really does it. but those big asss posters of chords if that helps. and listen to some songs, acoustic, preferably, and then learn them for practice. the strumming was hard for me, but you just have to really listen to the songs.

and hey, a friend who know how to play to teach you would be great too. guitar lessons would be sweet, but not entirely necessary.

Get one. Play. Experiment. Listen and try to immitate. Learn songs you like from tablature in magazines or songbooks. Forget chordbooks, scales or lessons for now. They'll just bore you. When you've learned a bit, you can take on those things. Keep in mind that for a while you're going to suck, but eventually your fingers will get calloused and strong, and one day (suddenly) you'll be able to play. Have fun and keep at it.

first you must learn how to spell it.
then you must go out and buy one.
then find a good guitar teacher or easy a song to play.
then you must sit down for hours upon hours, practising.
then you are on your way to playing a stringed guitar!!
I wonder what other kind of guitars there are??

look up guitar chords/notes. find a cool song but easy song to play like some Ramones or something and then figure out the chords and slowly but surely you will learn.
