And how much snow usually drops in one snow event?

Btw, I live in New York City and I love snow. Snowfall here is way too inconsistant and I'm thinking of attended University at Buffalo in a few years.

it depends on the year. We run in cycles of normal snow (anything under three feet is normal here LOL) and BIG snow -- ie. the blizzard a few years back that dumped 7 feet on us (we exported a bunch to Denver because there was no place to put it!). Last year was actually pretty - just enough to keep things looking white and clean with that little glimmer on the branches.

Don't believe that guy about housing prices - the city is down due to other issues but suburban houses haven't lost value. Ours has gone up about 1/3 in 8 years.

Honestly however, snow falls on you - you move it and get on with life. We're rarely closed for more than a day here -- and our weather doesn't take houses apart like tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. We keep some basic emergency gear in case electric goes out, or we get stuck in the car - but like anything in nature you learn what to do, when to do it and adapt.

UB is a relatively nice school - the campus is centrally located to bus routes, supermarkets, the party district, and some nifty clothing stores (or if you prefer, arts/antiques in allentown). And since you're a NYS resident, you'll get a great price on tuition comparatively.

It does snow here, but not as often as people think. We'll get about 2-3 good snowfalls a year. When this happens we'll get 6inches to a foot. We'll get a couple dozen or so days when the ground gets coated with a dusting of white. There are lots of slushy sleety days in winter. And a lot of days with nothing but cold when you can see the grass.

The real snow near buffalo is south of the city because it's right next to the most open parts of Lake Erie. Syracuse, a couple hours east, gets a lot more snow than we do.

University at Buffalo-- Great School. Decent size too. If you go to the Amherst Campus, it's just a tad north of the city, so they don't get quite as much snow. They're north of the lake. If you're at the City Campus, you'll get a little more.

A couple of people have mentioned housing values-- it's an affordable city to live in, yes. Our economy is poor... lots of manufacturing jobs have left because property taxes tend to be very high here. Lots of people have left to follow the job market in recent years. As a result, we have a surplus of cheap housing. Rent is pretty affordable-- I own a 2 bedroom apartemtn that I rent out for only 450/month.

If you're staying off campus, you'll want to look into renting a house that has been converted to apartments. They're usually decent and much cheaper than the apartment complexes you'll find advertised online. Check the Buffalo News home rentals before you choose your apartment.

Good luck.

up here in upstate ny we get huge snowfalls some years, I would say based on experience that it can snow a lot. i have been living a few hrs from buffalo for around 20 yrs now and the most I have seen in one snowfall is 3-4 ft. i have seen the people in buffalo get slammed by some big snowfalls sometimes. usually in one snow event there are 1-2 inches but with a blizzard we can get 6-12 inches. it snows probably on average two or three times a week but in the peak season can snow every day. and it's not just the snow but the temps too can get very cold. once we went two weeks in '04 with no temp above 20F. you can check the actual weather statistics but these are my subjective impressions, probably i"ve made this out to be worse than it really is because it's so awful.

Holy Sh$t Buffalo is Cold was our nicnkname for HSBC Bank when it took over the bank I worked for in NYC. It is very cold and snows all the time. I would not go to Ithaca College because when I went for a visit it was snowing in October and Buffalo is worst.
