The actual downloading application doesnt have viruses. Viruses usually come from downloaded files using such p2p apps e.g. you downloaded a software but hidden was a trojan. However, be careful of some sites that allows you to download the p2p application. You should always use the official site. Some official p2p sites will tell you whether there are ads or not. Free versions may have ads, pro versions will not [e.g. limewire i think they have ads in the free version but not sure].
The safest p2p program would be the newsgroups method. Virtually impossible for the authorities to get you. Other p2p methods are safe unless you are unlucky enough to connect to an authority e.g. RIAA, MPAA etc. If you dont want to get caught downloading, then the absolute safest way is to not do it [apart from newsgroups].
Whichever method you use to download, your best opting for private ones such as private hubs for dc++ and private sites for bittorrent.
In all cases, google for Peerguardian and download it [its free]. Whenever you download, ensure that Peerguardian is running. What it does is download lists of blocked ips [usually government, RIAA, baddie people etc] and blocks those ips from connecting to you. Its not fool proof [as e.g. an RIAA staff could easily use a normal ip'd pc and catch you].

what are you kidding or a newbie no p2p sharing prog. is free of viruses and spyware they will say anything or not warn that viruses on your computer so you dont realize it but in the end you cant you have to download a spyware and virus protection (which i downloaded free software of p2p ironic huh)

Limewire, no p2p can guarantee no virus' u have to assume some risk but I have been using it for years and have been fine

i use this program called Ares. its really good. i've never had a virus or anything bad happen to the computer.
