I've tried several times and even said my computer can't handle the constant downloads and they gave me a list of websites with cheap computers. I've tried saying No and cancel and No and ended up with TWO accounts supposedly free except I kept getting billed and now I am down to one but am dreading the call hassle to get it canceled again. Call number 3 or 4 or 5. This should be illegal!

i had to call them up and tell them that i don't want it anymore and they kept offering me free months. and i kept telling them NO I DON'T WANT IT. and finally they did. but they were still some how charging me and i had no money in my bank account. so, every time they charged me, my bank would charge an OD Fee (over draw). and if you add that up over a 3 month span, that is A LOT of money. i was so pissed off. so i called them again. and i asked them what the hell was going on. and they told me it was another account that i had created a long time ago and that i would have to sign onto it and cancel it.
well, i tried. but guess what? i had forgotten what my password was. so, i called them up again and told them i forgot my password and asked if they can just cancel it. they said no. so, i asked them if they can give me my password and they said no. and i was so pissed. i asked them, "then how the hell am i going to cancel it, if i don't know my password." and they said, "i don't know"

and finally in the end, i paid off the outstanding balances in my bank account and closed my accounts in the same day, so that aol could no longer charge me.

they really do suck. and they tried to screw me over. they are like a freakin virus.

Just call and tell them you'd like to cancel. When they ask why, tell them your computer broke and you can't afford to get it fixed for a LONG time. There's nothing they can say. They may try to stumble around a bit and come up with something, but it's not possible!!! Anything they say will sound ridiculous and you'll obviously have the upper hand. They'll figure this out pretty quickly and give up. The more they say, the more fun you'll have. If you don't have access to a computer, you SURELY don't need AOL. Pretty funny... Try it.

Well, I found that cursing at the AOL phone assistance staff worked fairly well. Usually if you can show them your tired of waiting and playing games with them (it also doesn't hurt to say something along the lines of "I don't see how its at all legal for me to keep having to pay for this sh*t and be hassled by your company every time I try and cancel. If it were a contract I'd understand by my lawyer -*enter angery mumble*" as an added bonus) they'll cancel your services pretty quickly once they know they can't toy with you any more.

I'm naturally I quiet, easy-going person, but I noticed that when it comes to business deals, angery people are taken much more seriously.

Yes multiple times. If you are having trouble with cancellation of AOL call a lawyer and threaten to sue that should get their attention pretty fast. Also call the Credit card you used to sign up with AOL and tell them that you canceled that service and that you will dispute all further charges made by AOL Inc. and then follow up with the credit card company as needed.
I hope this helps you not have as much trouble as I did with AOL refusing to stop coming through a bank account I no longer have thanks to them.

It's really very easy... you call and tell them, then you send an email, and, while you're on the phone and they try to give you a million months free service, say, NO, thank you, and hang up!
Then, if you've been paying by bank account, do a stop payment, and tell the bank NOT to accept anymore withdrawals from aohell..
Then, go to Control Panel, then to Add/Remove Programs, and remove every bit of aohell that you can find from your puter.
good luck.

i was just straight forward with them on the phone. "I want to cancel, I am sure I want to cancel, do not offer me anymore free months, I wan to cancel... no... no... no, cancel. no, cancel. no cancel." you just keep saying NO and CANCEL enough, they'll get the point. Admittedly it's not a simple process. That's why AOL sucks.
