my answer: here in coastal north carolina, no homes seem to have basements (it's obvious why) many have carports instead of garages (maybe because garages get too warm?) almost all homes i've been in have no shortage of ceiling fans. there are not many raised wooden decks, but quite a few attached concrete porches. maybe the wood doesn't hold up well in the humidity.

When I lived briefly in southern AZ, I noticed the sparsity of the trees, and the fact that the ones that were there weren't of a true spade offering variety... and folks seemed to landscape more with cacti and stones, even cinder-blocks that were colorfully decorated.
Also the houses seemed to be predominately one story, even the fancier houses that went up the valley walls. Swirling one level pastel stucco abodes, again decorated with brick paths through stone gardens.
If I were to guess, I would say it was to keep close to the cooler mother Earth, cement and tile flooring, not carpet that can be too warm and rough against the bare skin.
Alas I am not meant for the high temps, even if I could trade in the swamp's humidity which is equally if not more oppressive. Fact is, have to be around the green, love my shade trees, love the feel of lush lawn grass between the toes.
Plus having the ocean nearby is quite handy too....

i live in a small island in ASEAN starting with a "s" , here most pple live in high rising buildings are lands are scare. but we do have bunglow or terrace houses. all houses are built using bricks and metal irons. very strong and stable constructions.
