the best example of this is mysterious skin. the boys in that film were told to just act scared and weirded out, they were not given a context for this, they just had to act scared. when the film was edited it showed the boys in scenes where they were being sexually abused without them having been exposed to anything of the sort in filming. the film has an r rating. the boys did well and the film was really good, challenging to watch, quite draining actually. good example of a director who seccessfully took on the challenge of filming child sexual abuse without actually exposing 8 year old children to this ugly side of life (on screen or off)

I think the child actors would not be allowed to watch the film at the cinema. When making the film shooting is often disjointed and the child may not experience the parts of the film which earn an adult certificate. Sometimes it may be just one scene or a matter of a few minutes which earn the X rating. There are some cases where the child's part is integral to the film - such as the Exorcist. I have seen the extras on the DVD and the young girl in this film was well aware of the story and the background to her part. It would be interesting to know if she was allowed to attend the premiere for instance.

It all falls upon the parents if they allow children to watch...and I'm pretty sure that if the child is allowed to act in the film, the parents would ok them to watch/recall everything they just went thru for the last year or so...
"In the opinion of the Rating Board, this film definitely contains some adult material. Parents are **strongly urged** to find out more about this film before they allow their children to accompany them. An R-rated film may include strong language, violence, nudity, drug abuse, other elements, or a combination of the above, so parents are counseled in advance to take this advisory rating very seriously."

That's a good one! I'm sure that the studio lets the kids see the film, probably with their folks, before it is released. But sure Hayley Joel Osment, unable to watch "Sixth Sense" at the cinema! It's a joke!
On a similar note, a boy-band in the late-eighties turned up at a nite-club in a city near me one Saturday night. They weren't allowed in, because they were wearing trainers (sneakers) and were all under 21! They sent their driver/minder, a huge guy, to muscle his way into the club, and take their records off the DJ! Fists got flung, and it all ended up in the papers...

Most young movie stars know it is a movie. They see the technical side and are just in their scenes. When you post a question it will show you similar asked questions.
