To get 1 kg. of payload into low-Earth orbit with the Space Shuttle, about 300 km. up, costs about US$10 000, so if you plus your life support equipment weigh say 500 kg, it would cost about $5 million, and a somewhat smaller amount to bring you back. So for a short trip, consisting of a few orbits, say $9 million minimum. SpaceShipOne could get you to the upper legal limit of territorial airspace 100 km. up for a couple of hundred thousand. The only way space travel will ever be economically and environmentally affordable for the masses will be when there's an Arthur C. Clarke space elevator to geostationary orbit, 36 000 km. up.

Through the Russians it costs from 10 to 20 million dollars to be a space tourist and visit the Internation Space Station (ISS).

There are plans in the works to allow civilians to travel to the edge of space for around $200,000 but that is still a few years away.

Check for a local astronomy club if you want to contact some amatuer astronomers. Check out www.skytonight.com
