I think that Lennon is talking about spirituality VS. organized religion in this song.
I don't know that world peace is achievable without divine intervention, but I think that Lennon is arguing the case that the masses are responsible for their own governing. Why is it so difficult to imagine a world without war and poverty, and greed? Perhaps he was writing a song about his experience and his own selfishness, and was at a point in his life where he felt like a dolt.
I also think that labeling off certain ideas as particular to one political sect is foolish, as many of them have several ideas in common.

Imagine is certainly based on a ideal, but I have no idea why you think there is a link to Communism. Sorry to be rude, but Im not sure you understand the concept of Communism.
What JL wrote will never be realised as it is his idea of Utopia. And despite the fact that this is undoubtedly a great song - arguably the best ever written - we will struggle to find a songwriter with such passion for peace in the future.

How does the song Imagine sound communist?
It is a song about imagining there is peace and everyone getting along. Here are the lyrics in case you have never actually listened to them and understood them.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

I believe in the truth of the Holy Scriptures. Since man has a fallen and sinful nature, the only time Lennon's dream will become a reality is when the Lord Jesus Christ himself returns to set up his millennial kingdom! Until then, it will keep getting a lot worse!

Lenon was just as naive as most other liberals .... sh it like that can only happen in fairy tales.... to live happily ever after in the real world you have to fight to keep the wacko terrorists and dictators from taking over. Thank god for the men and women who are heroic enough to go over there and fight those evil bastards.

It sounds to me that John wanted to think about, imagine, a heaven on earth.
Not bullshit, but probably not achievable either.
Possibly achievable by small groups.
It asks neat questions that many things that are supposedly good, like religion, and making one's living, can cause so many problems.

I despise the Beatles' music so much even if it made perfect sense I'd have a hard time following any of their idealistic plans. So I guess not.

Considering he wasn't overly great at sharing his wealth so much as splashing out on the most ostentatious symbols/products of capitalism, his actions belied his sentiments.
