handles up, that way you don't stab yourself and not touching the parts you eat with.

My wife and I have discussed this subject. I experimented by trying it both ways. Handles up may be safer if a person is not alert but when I put the handles up I always had to wash some of the utensils. When the handles go down there is no basket to disrupt the flow of wash water around the non-handle end and the stuff is almost always cleaner.

Just wash your hands and exercise a bit of care when you put stuff away.

BTW, I don't use the dishwasher for cutlery. The sharp edges get bumped together and dull the knives. Besides most of our knives are Chicago brand with wood handles. Wood in a dishwasher is very hard on the wood. Even wooden spoons etc. get hand washed in my kitchen. Yeah, I'm a guy and it's my kitchen. My wife can use it once and a while but not often.

Have to put the forks and knives that I have in dishwasher with the handles UP. The handles are very slender and tend to slip through the dishwasher tableware basket.

handles down the tines and the blades get the washed best this way and the dirt will slide down and away from the eating and cutting implements. Since I'm the only one who goes into the dwasher I don't worry about getting cut . if I put the handles up the water can't get to them all the way around because of the interior walls of the basket and too many other peices of silverware block the water flow.

Dull knives like table knives = handles down. Sharp knives like the bf's switchblade and the butcher knives = handles down. How else do you get to jam in the emergency room. I know this was not serious.

Alternate! The spoons will have a better chance of getting clean if they are alternated to prevent 'spooning'. The knives of course should be distributed & placed blade down for safety & maybe the fork tines down too but I alternate the forks.

Handles down -- have children and too the washing portion of the dishwasher is on the bottom and top so I want the food to drain downward and not get stuck on my handles. Also, when they are drying I want the portion I stick into my mouth to be the closest to the heater for better sanitizing.

I do handles up - especially knives - to prevent stabbing/poking by forks, etc.

My husband likes handles down so he can pick out which piece he needs in one grab.

Handles up so they get into the wash and you don't handle the eating surfaces when removing them and putting them away. I always thought that was the most sanitary way to do it.
