This evening I watched a documentary marking the 5th anniversary of 9/11. One of the things they mentioned was that after everything the firefighters had been through their ordeal was still not over as many were becoming ill with cancers and lung problems due to inhaling the dust and debris that day.
As far as I can recall no mention has ever been made of the homeless people in New York. How did this tragedy affect them?

I've worked in SRO's (Single Room Occupancy) shelters in New York City and I can say that homelessness has increased since 911 along with post traumatic stress disorder symptoms. We are trying to help our homeless population but money is tight since the War in Iraq. We need to prioritize. Those who were homeless prior to 911 are generally still living in shelters or on the street. The scary part is that there are now 20,000 homeless on any given night in our city's shelter system, or in the streets.

Very interesting question. I wonder how close to the WTC the homeless people were when the events took place. It seemed to be located in a high profile business area and don't the police usually run them away from places like that? If some were around then they are more than likely suffering from health problems and remorse like everyone else effected by those events. Speaking of 9/11 documentaries-check out 'Loose Change' at Google Video. You can watch the whole movie for free at www.google.com and this is a real EYE OPENER about the events surrounding 9/11-not some hollywood fluff chopped and edited according to what someone else feels you should know about that day.

A very, very good question.

It would appear that we have forgotten others like the homeless that must have been deeply effected by 9/11.

I cannot believe that it was almost 5 years ago that this dravesty took place. And every time I think aboout it, I always think of a difference facet connected to this awful event. Like what has happened to the orphaned children, how are people dealing with their injuries (the ones that survived). The effect of it all on the everyone involved in the rescue on that tragic day.

It just never goes away and the more times I watch footage of the events unfolding, it still seems like it was the creation of some movie maker. Unbelievable

I hope you get the answer you are looking for!

you're only getting your self right into a pissing contest. Time to enable pass of the gangster mentality. the two events are working as a collection to break the country. Whom ever comes after BHO, will proceed the ball rolling, only like Bush persevered Clinton's stride. end being a lemming, and attempt to have an unique concept. there is the place the project is, no person thinks for themselves to any extent further.

During 911 I do remember hearing a news man talk about a couple of homeless men who were running. While they were running several small children who were also running from the day care center from Tower One; fell down while running and a homeless man picked up a child under each arm and run with them. Thank God for that man.

I don't think many people would have been left homeless by 9/11, as the WTC was in the centre of the financial district, which is mainly stores and office blocks.

actually not much as they were never allowed near the wall street area to hang out. some may have applied for the fema aid due to stress and area's they may have hung out. everything is focused on the towers and the people. the homeless were the least of their problems at the time.

They don't allow the homeless to meander too long downtown in the Wall Street area so they were all safe mid- and uptown, if not already shipped to Brooklyn.
