I know someone who got accepted and his grades werent that impressive. They were maybe around a 3.8 (which is good dont get me wrong but there are people who are applying with a 4.2 or higher gpa) but I think the reason he got accepted was because he did alot of extracurricular activites like band, dance, class council, volunteer etc. His essay had to have been pretty good too is my guess.

Top Universities like NYU are incredibly competitive, but it might not be too late for you, as you have 2 years left. I'm a lot older but I skipped 9th grade and didn't do too well my sophomore year due to a change of high school. Anyhow, I buckled down and took a full load of excelerated classes my junior and senior year and got almost straight A's (not perfect A's but close).
I also did summer school and took a couple of classes at community college my senior year, and I was in the symphony orchestra and theater all through high school.
It worked. I was able to get into every school I applied for including Stanford and University of the Pacific (I didn't apply to any East Coast schools).
Grades is just one thing they look at; extraordinary talent in one area and/or leadership skills are also considered. Doing things like volunteer work, or class officers, editor on the newspaper, etc. are all viewed in a positive light.
You can't change the past, but making the effort now may well work and certainly will help. What they will see is a kid that got the message a little late, but did get it, and you will have demonstrated that you have the intelligence and ability to do the work, which is their primary concern.
They want students that will work hard and want to learn, plus they want an interesting student body. So show them you are the kind of student they want and you might just get your wish.
Other tips..sometimes applying for entrance in the winter or spring, instead of the big crush of fall works. I did that to my first choice school, University of California, Davis and it worked. Their own admissions people told me to do it because I probably would not have gotten in for the fall term.
You should also have alternate choices, usually you have 1 or 2 top choices that are very competitive, 2 or 3 medium likelyhood choices and a safety. These schools can be fickle and competition is stiff so you never want to put all your eggs in just one basket.

Do you know anyone important? That may help. Otherwise you are probably out of luck unless you get some amazing scores on your SATs. NYU is one of the top schools in the country!!!
