Check with your local utilities for an average of how much electric, gas, and water will be. You also want a good location. Also note where the shops are. You will need to know where you can get milk at 2 in the morning when you run out.

They make you pay a large amount of your hard-earned money every month for the privelege of living there, and if you don't pay they will kick you out on the street.

Also, most apartments charge you the first month's rent, the last month's rent, and a security deposit of more or less equal value before they allow you to move one stick of furniture in. Make sure you have that all together before you start shopping around.

What utilities, if any, are included in the rent

The size of the rooms and doors in the apartment - will your furniture fit?

Is it in a safe area?

Does the landlord have a good reputation? Often city halls will keep files on landlords who have had multiple complaints filed against them.

Are there any policies regarding smoking, pets, subletting?

Check the location as well. You don't want to live in a neighborhood where you feel scared just walking to your car. Try to get a place close to school/work/friends/etc as well so you can save a little on gas! As far as expenses go, you might want to research a bit as well all the utility costs such as water, gas, electricity, etc, as well as amenities such as cable TV and take that into account with your affordability determination.

Location, if you gonna live alone spend more money in rent to get the gated entrance/exit also.....Save up a couple months rent just in case.....living on your own is expensive.....and if you need furniture go to ikea.....also sign the smallest lease term they have....you might not like it there....and you don't want to be stuck there for 18months....i would sign a 6month lease you can always sign another one once this one expires

Get ready to do some adjusting! You will be alone, and responsible for your own bills, and all your needs. It can be wonderful, if you pay your rent on time, don't allow moochers to move in on you and take advantage of you. It will be a whole new set of rules, be safe, and you will enjoy your journey!!!

Make sure it's free of roaches, rats, mice, cracked ceilings, loose toilet bowls, shower heads that don't come off when you turn it on, and also make sure your next door neighbor is neither a drug dealer or a pedophile! Make sure you can get your deposit back after you move out.

THAT IF YOU DON'T HAVE A ROOMATE EVERYTHING WILL BE IN THE EXACT SAME PLACE THAT YOU PUT IT IN.
HOW MUCH IS RENT,UTILITIES,FOOD,FURNITURE,LAUNDRY EXPENSES,GAS TO AND FROM WORK,SCHOOL.UNEXPECTED EXPENSES,LIKE MEDICINE IF YOU GET SICK AND CAR REPAIRS ,ETC.DON'T START SOMETHING YOU DON'T WANT TO ALWAYS DO,LIKE COOK AND SHARE MEALS WITH A NEIGHBOR.yOU WILL NEVER GET RID OF THEM.NEVER BE A LENDER OR BORROWER.
