It could be a problem with the screen saver. Modify it to appear after a longer period of time. And when you come back and it's blank, move your mouse, it might take a while, but I don't think there's need to unplug the monitor. Also check to see if theirs a reset button on the surge protector. Sometimes by resetting the surge protector thing will work again. I hope this helps.

The video card inside your computer is: 1. Either not working and needs replacing. 2. If you have a built into the motherboard video it might not be working and buying a new video card would resolve your problem or 3. The video card inside your computer may have rocked itself out of its slot (most of the time this is the problem) and needs to be pushed back in place to get a full connection. After repairing computers for more than 10 years I know that there are those individuals that will not get into a computers insides and if that is you then you will need to go to a reliable pro and pay to have it done. If on the other hand you want to give this a shot then you need to get a repair book and learn. Repairing computers is like maintaining Roses, there are those who want to make you think that it is hard but it is in fact quite easy. I pointed you in the right direction and good luck.

Sounds like your video card or the video circuit on your motherboard is cooked. Either way, a new video card should fix your problem.
