My parents think im is not safe. I have email, but all my friends have im, so i can't talk to them!!! Do u agree with my parents? Are they crazy or smart??

Well.. If you aren't talking to people that you have never met your parents are wrong. If you are talking to people you have never met your parents are right.
its the Internet. Anyone can pretend to be anyone. Even on line, the person you think is your friend, could be someone else pretending to be them. Nothing is ever safe.
Ims are just the new version of the partyline. Just because your behind a screen doesn't mean you're any less safe.
Prove to them that you are only talking to people that you know and you should be ok,
You can even tell them to load parental control software. If you're not talking trash or smack, then you have nothing to hide from them no? And they would have no reason to disagree from you talking to your friends on im, unless you are not paying attention to your homework and family duties...

Your parents are NOT crazy for not letting you talk on IM. IM is indeed a waste of time.
They are right that it is not safe. You are not missing much. There are a lot of predators out there. Additonally, the chat rooms are populated with "bots," automated approach systems that want you to go to this or that website for "adult encounters."
You're not missing anything.

it is a fair point, because people will just sit on it all night. which is probably a smart thing from preventing.
they are cautious, which is neither crazy or smart as it will potentially leave you open to make mistakes in later life. using an IM is safe as long as you know who you're talking to.

THEY LOVE YOU and are protecting you. There are too many bad guys in this world who want to do things to pretty girls that mess up their lives forever. TONIGHT, give your parents each a hug and kiss and thank them.
You don't tell your age but I think you should be doing more constructive things than looking at a comptuer screen. I know of no geniuses who became a genius by chatting IM.

Your parents are right because you never know what kind of sickos you will meet on here, like me for instance. you dont know anything about me except what i want you to know, I could be a real bad sex offender trying to hook up with someone like you, but i tell you i am an sweet little old lady. what you could do is let your mom or dad set next to you so they can watch and feel safer.

well just don't talk to anyone that you don't know. my parents were like that at first but then like i ask my classmates for help with homework so they're ok with it now. and i'm not saying that if you're not using it for hw help you can't IM cuase like that would be total wtf. lol like just go on it and feed it little by little to your parents that it helps your homework...=D

If you want you can just download im and they will never know... im is not unsafe but it can be very addicting.
