I need something that is dead nuts reliable, gets around well in the winter, has five passenger capability, is easy on gas, and is either a wagon or hatchback so I can throw my guitar and other stuff in the back. I'm thinking Subaru.

Normally, I'll buy a car that's a couple years old, so I guess I'm looking at an '05 Subaru. Any particular models to look for? Anything to watch out for? Any ideas on where I can look for good deals?

Read my reply two questions down, "Need owner opinions on Outback or Legacy."

I bought this car specifically with hauling band gear in mind. It works and I like it. It is better then a Jeep Liberty, which someone else mentioned, or any other vehicle where the rear gate opens like a door. When you flip up the tailgate, you have total access to load and unload without trying to angle stuff in there. You also have a rain shield overhead for those nasty days.

It holds virtually the same amount as a Forester, but I found the Forester to be a bit too choppy in the ride. I thought I was going to buy a Forester and ended up with an Outback.

I had a Subaru Impreza for almost 10 years (5 speed) I loved her. Only reason I gave her up, my husband said at her age, big things were going to start needing replacing. I am now driving a Chevy Tracker. I love the look and the space, but it just doesn't have that solid feel that my Subaru did. If I ever get another car, it will be a Subaru!

I have a 1998 Subaru Forester that I love. It hasn't had any major mechanical problems, gets decent gas mileage and has good hauling capabilities. It also has better visibility than many cars I test drove.

A lot of people trade every two years. Try to find a lower milage trade in that has had good care. The Outback will give you a little more ground clearance for the deeper snows to enjoy the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive. Enjoy!

I think Subarus are hidden gems. They are good cars but not quite as refined as others in it's class.

For your application I would choose the Legacy. Try get the newer one actually because they are more refined. The 06 look really cool, I've seen a black one and it stands out.

The Forester would be my next choice. They just redesigned it and now it looks much nicer.

if u have enough money go for bmw 325/330 xi (wagon), or audi A4 avant 2.0T/3.0 Quattro, right now the audi quattro 4wheel drive system is the best out there, thus making it the most reliable. Volvo's are the best safety wise for many years now so u might want to consider that also. But i recommend the A4 wagon w/quattro.

I'm on my second Dodge Caravan. First one lasted 12 years (175k) and it still ran like new when I sold it.
