I guess the two main differences are:

1) Mafia members' last names all end in vowels.

2) Mafia members know who their fathers were and may have, in fact, spoken to their fathers on certain occasions.

i think mafia people are serious and they make money! while gangs are just in a neighborhood but the mafia is like a huge web that extends cross country, they're more business like, blackmailing, i do this for you, now you do this for me, favors.
