While tilling a small bed today, I came across a couple of small (1" diameter) spheres. They were soft and very purple. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they were. I live in Kansas, and I tilled no more than 5-6" deep. I really don't know at what level they were originally. I'm wondering if they were fungi or possibly larvae eggs.

Thank you in advance for any information you can give me.

Okay, well it definitely is not a bulb, much too soft. I haven't dissected it because, while I appreciate entomology, I have an unreasonable phobia of maggots. If it turned out to be a larva, it would probably make me gag. :) We don't have a lizard population here in the outskirts of Kansas City, so I doubt that it is a little lizardette.

Any other thoughts?

If you think it's some sort of plant life you might contact Mike Haddock, creator of the Kansas Wild Flower web site at:

Haddock's email address is available on this page.

If you think it might be a "bug" you can contact the Dept of Entomology at Kansas State University.

There's an email contact link of this page for insect problems or questions.

My best to you

I can't say I have ever come across a purple bulb....can you take a picture for us? And did you try to slice one open and see what is inside, it sounds like it could be egg sacks of some critter....lizards tend to have very round eggs...they are usually buried too. You will only be sacrificing one and then you could put the others back into some soil if there is something inside that isn't grown yet.

I guess I'd have to know first if you had planted anything in there previously. You may want to describe them in detail and then ask the same Q in the Biology section. sorry I could'nt be of more help.
