Shallow people usually think of them selves as being Gods gift to the world, egocentric (i think that's how is spelled), and usually think of others as lower life forms if a form of life at all. In essence shallow people think they are superior usually in looks however there are some shallow people that care only about their intelligence but thanks every one else is a brainless barbarian. I how ever think that it is (if at all possible) very rare due to the fact that they see intelligence instead of appearances.
I think of it like this: a Shallow Persian has too much pride and/or a massive (at least mount Everest size) ego, usually centered around looks (stereotypical) and/or intelligence, and also try to force their own way/ideas/fashion preferences/intellectual thoughts onto others that they have deemed as lesser then they.
This is how shallow is defined on www.wikipedia.com--"Shallow means not very deep. It can be quite advantageous, e.g. a shallow pool is safe for swimming and a shallow ore is easy to mine. Nonetheless, used metaphorically it is a derogative term used to describe people who are perceived to lack intellectual "depth". There is no standard definition of what constitutes "depth" in this sense, but usually an individual is considered deep if they seem to be interesting, original, creative, philosophical or intelligent. By contrast, somebody who appears superficial, naive, materialistic, petty, unimaginative or a conformist is likely to be denounced as being shallow, although simply lacking intelligence is not a criterion on its own." (sarrie I do not know how to make a hyperlink)
and now I shall end my statement with a quite from the Gospole acording to Matthew chapter 7 versie 1-5 and versie 13-14:(Matthew 7:1-5) "Stop Judging, that you may not be judged. For as ou judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove that s;linter from your eye," while the wooden beam is in your eye? You hypocrite, remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you wil see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:1-5); (Matthew 7:13-14) would be better for this (Matthew 7:13-14) "Enter throug the narrow gate; for the gate is wide the road broad the leads to destruction, an d those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few" (Matthew 7:13-14)
Sarrie for being so long winded, I just had so much that I wanted to say.

It's is one thing to take pride in your appearance, as long as it doesn't consume your every minute. If you consider yourself more clever than others it can be a form of being shallow, but also prideful. Any clever person knows that there is always something you don't know, so if they are braggy about their cleverness, then they aren't as smart as they think they are.

Yes both can be shallow, both relate to promoting one's self.
Caring how you look is fine providing it's not an obsession, likewise being aware of people's differing intellectual strengths and weaknesses means you are observant, if it is too important to you then you are out of balance.
It's about thinking right and being at peace with who you are, what you look like, how clever and able you are etc.
Priorities need to be right: good relationships with people is the number one priority, living a moral life is equally important and interrelated.

Leaving narcissistic obsession aside one must draw a line between the private sphere and the public one. Within the confines of the first you may well choose not to care but as you move into the next you are putting yourself under the public gaze and accordingly need to care. Thus, however libertarian one may be one cannot just amalgamate the two.

I think if you can balance looking fabulous and being clever, then it makes all the difference. There's nothing worse than a pretty face and a dim wit.
Of course, anyone wearing a police hat in their avatar is automatically cool ;-)

If you obsess about how you look, then you can be thought of as shallow. But, otherwise it is best to look well and put your best foot forward! If you announce to the world that you are smarter than everyone else, that, also would be deemed as shallow, I would think.

I think what people mean when they say that is about people who are only interested in how they look and don't care about anyone or anything going on around them
