I used to work for the post office - they are collected and saved at the main distribution centers in the area you're from. Sometimes, they will be opened and responded too, but mostly they are placed in bins and put into storage.

I know that they end up at the post office. There is usually a report about that every year during Christmas time. They never say what they do with the letters but I think they throw them away. The second most letters they receive at the post office are letters to God.

You will have to check with your local Post Office but I know mine takes the letter and responds back to the children who write. They also take one child and makes sure that child has the Christmas they dream about.

I am from a small town and I didn't find out until recently that the post man would give them to my grandma....but I believe that some people actually read them and fulfill as a charity

They all go to Santa and he has the elves help him read them.
That is what helps him make up his bags of goodies.
