I have a desktop and a laptop, but both don't have the exact same files on them. I would like to be able to access my desktop when I am at work. I know my desktop's ip address if that would help.

if you have winXP, you can set up a remote access on the computer. Look in the help and support file on how to do it. All you need is the IP address, name and passowrd. If you're behind a router at home, you need to make sure you open the correct port so the router will allow the connection.

First of all, do you have a static IP address? If not then then you need a dynamic dns account. Beyond that if you're using Windows XP just enable remote desktop and ensure it you don't block it with a firewall. It's all in the help files in Windows.

If they are both going to be connected to the internet when you want to access the other, id recommend to use Logmein Free. http://www.logmein.com and click on the green "Get LogMeIn Free" Click Here button to setup a free account, and follow their instructions on setting up your home pc and work pc.

Involves installing a software on both machines.

Easy to use, point and click, and secure encrypted connections. Don't need to remember IP addresses/names, and much faster performance than microsoft's remote desktop or RealVNC.

You would have to install a vpn client software on both machines. I would research some for security purposes. And how to open ports to allow access into your computer.
