Leave your dorm room door open when you're unpacking or just watching TV or bumming around your room. People will stop by and start up a conversation. Have anwsers prepared for the following questions: Where are you from? What's your major? Why did you choose this college? Do you want to go eat?

Meet your roomate, ask those questions, talk to her/him about the arrangement of the room, and you'll figure out some stuff you have in common.

At dinner time, stop by the next open door on your dorm, and ask if they want to go eat.

Smile at people in the hall, in your dorm and in the academic buildings.

On the way out of class, make eye contact with the person next to you, and say "Gosh, this sounds tough." That person will ususally at least smile, and that opens you up for another random comment at the next class. If that person responds with an comment back, then start chatting.

Go to the involvement fair and join an organization or sign up to volunteer. When you go to a meeting, you have a pre-prepared topic to talk about to break the ice. And then people will ask you the above questions, and start the conversation there.

Don't put to much pressure on yourself. You probably won't make fast best friends in the first week. Just like the friends you have at home, friendships take a while to build. Just be friendly and keep smiling. You'll connect with people.

One way is to go to class early. Everyone who is early has nothing to do but visit and chat.

If you are in the dorms, hang out in the lobby - reading homework, maybe.

Or join a student group -- there will be a hundred different interest groups.

Volunteer at the radio station and get your own show.

Ask a classmate if they want to be study partners.

And take your time .. you'll find some friends soon. Smile!

Join a frat or the gym. get to some beer bashes. Stay buzzed. It gives the added confidence of alcohol with 1/2 the wit of a sober person. Dont overdo it if you are shy. In a little bit, you could try to get into some study groups. This would work as well, and its a little tamer.

Why can't you be yourself??? F*ck them if they don't like you.

A good way to meet people of similiar interests is join a club or hobbie group for something you like.
