Bettas are egglayers and don't get pregnant.

However they can fill up with eggs if they are ready to mate. You can tell if she is more round and robust than usual, with possibly some lines on her abdomen, and will be able to see her ovipositor, which will be whitish in color, protruding in front of her anal fin. It will look like a white dot.

When I read some of these answers, I just shake my head. I just can't believe some of the things people actually believe. Male bettas (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah) do not fertilize the eggs in their mouths. The eggs are fertilized by the male as they embrace and the female drops them out of her body. He then picks them up in his mouth and puts them in the nest.

Male bettas do not kill everything in their tanks, only other male bettas. You cannot keep females with males, the males will damage or kill females if the females are not ready for spawning. He will also go after her after spawning when she has no more eggs for him. Female bettas are not agressive, you can keep multiple females in the same tank.

You can't, they lay eggs. Also most likely you have a male betta. most places sell only male bettas due to the fact that the females have really short fins. The eggs when they are ready, live in a bubble nest made by the father.

ok the male betta does fertilize the egg. This girl before me doesn't have a clue what she is talking about. Stephanie was right. Maybe she needs to read up before answering a question. If you have any doubt go to this website http://members.aol.com/andrerich/aquarium/breeding.htm. This will tell you the process of betta breeding, and yes, the male does fertilize the egg! Please don't listen to the people who have a clue about what they are talking about.

betta fish aren't livebearers, they are egg-layers. once they are a few months old they begin producing mature eggs.

mating is usually a very difficult process between two fish that would rather tear each other to peices. the male builds a bubblenest at the surface of the water, and after a few hours (or maybe days) of chasing and nipping the male convinces the female to come under his nest, where he embraces her repeatedly, squeezing her eggs out and fertilizing them. he then picks them up and places them in the nest to take care of them.

re: the girl who said he fertilizes them in his mouth.... ouch, that was so dumb it hurt. i'll assumed she mistyped something...

Female bettas do not become pregnant. They just develope eggs as days pass. when the female is really fat (you can usually see the eggs in her belly) she is ready to breed. the male squeezes the eggs out of her by wrapping himself around her, the eggs fall to the ground, (she will become paralized, dont worry shes okay) the male DOES fertalize the eggs in his mouth, he puts a coating on the eggs, which enable them to hatch within a couple days. once the female is done breeding, remove her. the male will attack her. the male can be left in there until the fry (babies) hatch. He is usually taken out within a week or two. BUT some males can be left in until the fry get a lot older.

please visit this site.
it will tell you the many ways of breeding, plus all the facts you need to know.

If your fish is one of those brightly colored fish with long fins that they sell in small cups, I can guarentee it isn't pregnant. How? It's a boy. Females are smaller and don't have the elaborate fins.

Check http://freshaquarium.about.com/cs/anabantids2/p/bettaphoto.htm for a photo of a female Beta.

Girl bettas don't get pregnant. The male squeezes the unfertilized eggs out of the female, and then the male will fertilize them in his mouth. Then the female has done her job and has nothing to do with the eggs. The male will care for them until they hatech.
